Around the world in 25 days?  We thought you were nuts the last time!!

Well, here's what Richard Takata did for me.  He managed to make my previous record attempt adventure continue!  You see, as soon as I found out that I didn't get the record, it was just a matter of time before I had to try it again.  My brain wouldn't shut off until I had figured it out.

So, here's the deal.  My old friend Richard Donovan puts on a marathon in Antarctica in December. You might remember him as one of my traveling companions to the South Pole.  In fact, I call him one of my bi-polar friends, since he and I have actually traveled to BOTH poles together!  Anyway, since we met in 2002, we've both gone on to become legendary race directors. (Note: opinions expressed here are mine.  You're entitled to your own, but I'm the guy paying for this website.)

So, I'm joining Richard in Antarctica for the last leg of my new world-record attempt--to run official marathon events on all seven continents in less time than 29 Days 16 hours and 17 minutes.

From Guinness:

The current record for "Marathon on each continent - Shortest duration to complete (Men)" is:
The shortest overall time to complete a marathon on each of the seven continents is 29 days 16 hours 17 minutes by Richard Takata (Canada) from 4 February - 6 March 2007.

WHAT!!!  You've tried this before?

Yup.  In February and March of 2007.  Details of my 35-day attempt are included below.  Scroll down.

Give the gift of Mobility!

Running marathons on all the continents is a big challenge.  However, it's nothing compared to the challenge that faces many who just want to go from their living room to their mailbox.  That's one reason I've teamed up with Alternatives in Motion.

Alternatives in Motion is a nonprofit 501 (C)(3) organization in Grand Rapids, MI whose mission is to provide wheelchairs for individuals with no health insurance or other financial means. In 1995 Johnnie Tuitel (pronounced "Title") founded Alternatives in Motion after he was unable to get a wheelchair of his own. The staff and board of directors at Alternatives in Motion firmly believes that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in society and not be hindered by mobility issues. Through fundraising efforts and private donations, Alternatives in Motion provides new made-to-order wheelchairs and other mobility devices to people who need them. Since 1995 Alternatives in Motion has helped hundreds of people with their unmet mobility needs in the Midwest and all over the country. To learn more about Alternatives in Motion check it out at: www.alternativesinmotion.org.  Then join me in helping them to help others by making a tax deductible donation today.  All the money goes directly to them.

Around the world in 35 days?  Who is this guy?

Hi, I'm Don Kern.  My business card says Computer Guy, Writer, Adventurer, and other Cool Stuff.  It also says Race Director, Grand Rapids Marathon.  Somewhere in my past I saw a motivational speaker who convinced me that everyone should have 100 goals.  I made a list.  I've checked off a bunch of things.  Problem is, every time I go somewhere and talk to other adventurers, the list keeps growing.  Life becomes fun.  For more of my exploits, check out my website, www.cooladventures.net

What's the old record?

The current record for "Marathon on each continent - Shortest duration to complete (Men)" is:
Tim Rogers (GB) completed a marathon on each of the seven continents in 99 days, from 13 Feb–23 May 1999. He began with the Antarctica Marathon on King Jorge Island and also ran a marathon in the USA (North and Central America), South Africa (Africa) , France (Europe), Brazil (South America), Hong Kong (Asia) before finishing with a marathon at Huntly, New Zealand (Oceania).

As of December 2006, Tim Harris is working on breaking the record.  Information about his attempt is at sevendeadlymarathons.com.  If successful, he will break the record in Marrakech in January and set it at 91 days.

Here's an update:  On 6 March 2007, Richard Takata broke the record in only 30 days.  Maybe next time I shouldn't publicize things ahead of time.  He finished his quest as we ran together in our fourth consecutive marathon in Ushuaia, Argentina.  He didn't tell me of his specific timeframe while I was on my trip, allowing me the joy of finishing my quest before learning of his.  Thanks man!  I'm sure Richard and I will run a few more marathons together before we finish our lives journeys.

Marathon (Women) (record ID 53436)
Amie Dworecki (USA) completed a marathon on each of the seven continents in 523 days, from February 25, 2002 to August 2, 2003. She completed the Sahara Marathon (Africa), Leidsche Rijn Marathon (Europe), Canberra Marathon (Oceania), Mendoza Marathon (South America), Antarctica Marathon (Antarctica), Vancouver Marathon (North and Central America) and finished with the Siberian International Marathon (Asia).

Noelle Sheridan broke Amie Dworecki.'s women's record in December.  You can read about her at http://www.sheruns7.com/  Her record is in the 2008 version of the Guinness Book of World Records.

On February 26, 2007, Jeanne Stawiecki broke the women's record as well--in fact, we ran together in both Valencia Spain and in Antarctica.  She finished the seven continents in 141 days.  Now she's off to climb Everest to complete the seven summits!!  GO FOR IT, JEANNE!

And, a couple hours later, Ginny Turner finished the seven continents (her second time around) and broke Jeanne's record by finishing in 113 days!  Ginny is also the first woman to run the seven continents twice (as far as I've been able to determine.)

Why?

What the heck--doesn't everyone have a life list?  Mine is filled with a lot of ideas related to adventure, and one of the things is to be in the Guinness Book of World Records.  Since I'm not fast, extremely tall, extremely short, or willing to grow my fingernails or eyebrows for the next 32 years, I've got to do something.  And marathons are my thing.  (3/22/2007 After Richard's success, maybe I'll start growing my fingernails now!)

Other world records I've been a part of:

Most Competitors At A Marathon
The highest number of confirmed finishers in a marathon is 38,706, at the centennial Boston Marathon in Massachusetts, USA, on April 15, 1996.

And--one we're working on at the moment:

Most Experienced Marathon Field
On November 4th, 2006, the twelve competitors in the Ninth Annual Man O' War Charity Marathon had an average experience of 206 marathons each.  (As of 7 Feb, 2007, the Guinness people say they aren't going to put this in their database, but race director Don Hall is still claiming the record anyway!  Anyone who wants to dispute it?)

And then there's the non-Guinness world record, which can be found at nakedworldrecords.com:

First man to stand naked at both North and South poles: "Marathon" Don Kern (USA) achieved this on 18 April 2003. The temperature at both poles was approximately minus 32 degrees centigrade.

and the adventure continues....
